Encontra-se aberto concurso na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa/Centro de Linguística para atribuição de uma Bolsa de Investigação (BI) no âmbito do Projecto “As origens e o desenvolvimento de sociedades crioulas no Golfo da Guiné: um estudo interdisciplinar” (PTDC/CLE-LIN/111494/2009), coordenado por Tjerk Hagemeijer, financiado por fundos nacionais através da FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC).

1. Descrição da Bolsa e Objectivos a atingir pelo Candidato:

A bolsa pretende oferecer formação científica em linguística, no âmbito do projecto “As origens e o desenvolvimento de sociedades crioulas no Golfo da Guiné: um estudo interdisciplinar”, tendo como objectivo principal o tratamento e a informatização de dados de material oral e escrito das línguas crioulas do Golfo da Guiné (forro, angolar, lung’ie, fa d’ambô), para fins de constituição de corpora linguísticos. O/A candidato/a é incentivado/a a desenvolver uma tese de mestrado no âmbito do projecto.

A bolsa terá à duração de 24 meses, com início previsto em Abril de 2011.

2. Categorias de destinatários:

Este concurso destina-se a bacharéis ou licenciados.

Condições preferenciais:

– Formação na área da linguística;

– Domínio de um dos crioulos falados em S. Tomé e Príncipe;

– Conhecimentos de inglês;

– Familiaridade com sistemas de tratamento e análise de dados (linguísticos);

– Experiência na área da investigação científica.

3. Componente financeira:

O subsídio mensal da bolsa será de 745 € (setecentos e quarenta e cinco euros), conforme tabela de valores das bolsas atribuídas directamente pela FCT, I.P. no País (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). As bolsas serão pagas mensalmente por transferência bancária.

PhD Position (Promevendus) in Medieval Studies

The VIDI programme studies the phenomenon of glossed manuscripts in the Carolingian period. It sees marginalia as important witnesses of scholarly and scientific developments, essential for our understanding of intellectual life in early medieval Europe. It proposes three interrelated projects to explore the topic from three complementary angles, dealing with 1. scholarly genres and their interdependence; 2. leading centres of intellectual production and transmission; 3. the organisation of learning in a specific collection of manuscripts: the collection of Leiden University. The first of these projects will be carried out by the PhD researcher, the second by a postdoc researcher, the third by the project leader herself. The project will entail collecting and describing relevant research materials in the larger collections of early medieval manuscripts (the libraries of Munich, Paris, the Vatican, etcetera), but also mapping the observations onto their intellectual, cultural, and scholarly contexts. The PhD student is expected to: carry out the proposed research project take part in the activities of the research team present papers at international meetings, submit articles to peer-reviewed articles or collective volumes write a dissertation in English co-organise a symposium, and contribute to the publication of its proceedings.

Description

The candidates must have: a Master’s degree in Medieval Studies, Classical Languages or an equivalent degree relevant to the project; excellent knowledge of Latin, thorough knowledge of disciplines relevant to manuscript research (paleography, codicology, good manuscript reading skills), proficiency in English, a working knowledge of German and French; the ability to conduct independent scholarly research within a team setting under supervision; good ICT skills and the willingness to experiment with newly developed tools for digital analysis; good communication skills.

Benefits

The appointment will be available initially for 12 months. Upon positive evaluation, it will be extended with another 36 months (full-time). An appointment of 0,8 fte with according extension is negotiable. The preferred starting date for the project is 1 May 2011. The appointment must result in a dissertation at the end of the appointment. The salary starts at € 2,042.- in the first year and increases to € 2,612.- in the fourth year, based on a full-time appointment (scale P, Collective Agreement for Dutch universities), excluding 8% holiday pay and a 8,3% year-end bonus. Becas de máster y doctorado en Oxford

The Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics at the University of Oxford will
offer the Basant Kumar and Sarala Birla Graduate Studentship for DPhil study
beginning in 2011.  The Birla Studentship provides the full tuition and college fee, and
a maintenance grant commensurate to the national minimum doctoral stipend of the
UK Research Councils, for three years. All applicants are eligible.

We will also offer two AHRC Doctoral Studentships (funding for three years) and two
AHRC Master’s Studentships (funding for two years) for study beginning in 2011.
AHRC Studentships are held by students from the UK and EU: the studentship
covers full-time fees and maintenance for UK students, and fees only for EU
students outside the UK.

Clarendon Scholarships provide funding for study at Oxford by students from
countries outside the EU, and cover full-time fees and maintenance.  We anticipate
that we will be able to offer one or two Clarendon Scholarships for Master’s or DPhil
study in linguistics.

applications by 21 January 2011.  All applicants will be considered for the Birla

Research Assistant to work on a new critical edition of the Cantigas de Santa Maria (Oxford)

University of Oxford – Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, Centre for the Study of the Cantigas de Santa Maria

Grade 7: Salary £28,983 – £30747 p.a. (pro rata)

The faculty seeks to recruit a part-time (50%) Research Assistant from 1 October 2010 to work on a new critical edition of the Cantigas de Santa Maria and a Handbook of CSM Studies, under the direction of Dr Stephen Parkinson (Principal Investigator). This is part of a range of projects on the Cantigas de Santa Maria, the collection of poems in praise of the Virgin Mary composed and collected at the court of King Alfonso X of Castile, in the Centre for the Study of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, which is devoted to work on this collection. The Research Assistant will be responsible for the groundwork for and physical preparation of the critical edition, including a print anthology, and the Handbook.

The Research Assistant will also participate in the general work of the centre, including responding to enquiries, organizing seminars, attending meetings (in Oxford and Lisbon) with the Portuguese partner project, and assisting with the further development of the Cantigas de Santa Maria database.

The Research Assistant will have access to workspace and IT equipment in the Centre for the Study of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, and will be required to attend regular meetings with the Project Investigator, but will otherwise not be required to work in Oxford.

Candidates should have:

  • a higher degree (MA or PhD) in a relevant branch of Medieval Hispanic Studies
  • experience in manuscript transcription and critical editing
  • knowledge of Galician-Portuguese language and literature
  • good IT skills
  • experience of  using online databases
  • good editorial skills and attention to detail
  • good command of written and spoken English

This is a fixed-term post tenable for a period of not more than two years.

The candidate will study a case of variation of her/his choice in the field of Spanish grammar or lexicon. The case of variation proposed by the candidate may involve a) language contact situations, b) comparative study of two or more Spanish dialects, or c) variation internal to a single speech community. Appropriate possible topics would include: for a) the structure of the tense system of Paraguayan Spanish in bilingual speakers, word formation in Mexican Spanish in contact with Nahuatl; for b) the pronominal system in Northern Spain Spanish and in Andalusian Spanish, the distribution of past tenses in the grammatical system, the productivity of agentive suffixes in American and European Spanish; for c) the distribution of infinitives and gerunds in different types of texts, the formation of feminine animate nouns, any problem of normative grammar. The choice of the particular phenomenon under study will be left to the candidate, but the proposal must fit into one of the three areas of variation mentioned.
